In a major relief to local residents, the civil hospital in Phase 6 here is now offering thyroid and other hormonal tests on nominal rates.
After approval from the Punjab health system corporation, the hospital had already begun conducting these tests on all seven days of the week.
These tests were earlier got done from private labs, which was a costly affair.
Civil hospital sources said it would be the first hospital in the state where facilities for conducting such test would be available. The proposal for such test facilities at the civil hospital was in the pipeline for long.
"We have been working for long to offer these tests at our own lab so that these are available to SAS Nagar residents at affordable rates. We are the only hospital in the state where such tests would be done," said Rajiv Bhalla, senior medical officer, civil hospital.
Henceforth, a patient could get a thyroid profiling done in only Rs. 175, for which he otherwise shelled out Rs. 450 to Rs. 500 at a private lab.
"Getting the tests done was quite expensive earlier on, but now the cost will come down as the facility has now been made available at the civil hospital.
All expectant women undergo thyroid test during the first trimester of pregnancy; so this is a good move," remarked Savita Devi, a patients at the civil hospital.
"We will now be able to cut down on cost of treatment since patients at the civil hospital will not have to approach private labs for these tests," pointed out another patient Raghubir Singh.
