Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Vijender Vij said that medical examination of the 12-year-old victim which was conducted on October 7 confirmed that she was sexually abused.

He said that initially a kidnapping case was registered against 25-year-old Praveen, however, following the medical report section of rape was also invoked against him.

On Tuesday, HT had reported that the Panipat police was trying to keep the incident under wraps.

Vishal Nagar station house officer and investigating officer Hawa Singh had refused to divulge any detail about the medical examination report and reasons behind the delay in registering a rape case.

However, Vij on Tuesday confirmed that Praveen had picked up the victim from her residence on some pretext and then raped her.

Praveen had dropped the victim near local bus stand on October 4 and since then he is on the run.

Victim and accused hail from Ayodhya district in Uttar Pradesh and the girl's father works as a labourer in the town.

DSP said that initial investigations of the call details of accused's mobile phone record suggests that he was present at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh after the crime.

"Now we have sent teams to Ayodhya to trace the accused," he said the DSP.
