Jakhar asks Centre to intervene for fair probe

A day after former Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh demanded a CBI probe into Jagdish Bhola's drug racket, Leader of the Opposition Sunil Jakhar on Wednesday sought the Centre's intervention in the ongoing probe by the Punjab Police.

"Congress MLAs will soon meet union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde and seek central intervention to ensure that the present investigation does not get influenced and the real culprits do not escape the police net by using political influence," Jakhar said in a statement here.

"The Akali-BJP government had tried to confront drug menace when Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi raised the issue during his Punjab tour. Now, when a huge quantity of drugs worth crores of rupees are being found across the state, Rahul's words of caution and concern are being vindicated," Jakhar said.

"No one, irrespective of their political complexions, should escape investigation. A just investigation must reach its logical conclusion," Jakhar said, pointing out that the racket of drug peddlers was exposing the involvement of politicians, powerful businessmen and the state machinery.

Auto driver, aide held for outraging modesty of married woman

The local police have arrested auto driver and his aide for allegedly making an attempt to outrage modesty of a 22-year-old married woman on Friday. The police said the victim, who had been working in IT park, had hired an auto to her residence in Baltana.
