Jammu-Pathankot highway blocked over monkey menace in Kathua

Traffic on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway on Saturday remained suspended after the road was blocked over monkey menace in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir,a police official told UNI.

"The residents of village Jasrotia in Rajbagh area of Kathua this morning blocked busiest Jammu-Pathankot highway over rising cases of monkey bites," the official said.

He said that the villagers were demanding immediate redressal of the problem.

"The villagers had many times brought the matter to the notice of the police and the district administration of the village,"  Kathua deputy commissioner Zahida Praveen Khan told UNI.

She said, "The monkeys in the nearby wildlife sanctuary are creating panic in the village but we have directed the wildlife authorities to take immediate action."

Khan said that measures were being taken to solve the monkey menace.

"On the assurances from the wildlife authorities, the protestors dispersed and the traffic resumed on the highway," she added.

Hundreds of Vaishno Devi pilgrims were also stranded on the highway for hours in one-km long traffic jam in Rajbagh area of Kathua district.
