Chaos ruled city roads on Wednesday as Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) members protested in Sector 15, while anganwadi women workers camped at the Housing Board light point in Manimajra.

The PYC members wanted to march to the Vidhan Sabha, but were stopped by the Chandigarh police outside the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee office. Water cannons were used to disperse the crowd. More than 70 people were also detained.

The Madhya Marg from Sectors 11-15 was blocked. The situation was worse on the roundabout of Sectors 16 and 15 as the schools were also over for the day.

Traffic movement was hit up to Matka Chowk, Sector 16, Sector 15 and Sector 11.

Traffic was halted for about two hours on the busy road leading to Panchkula after around 200 women anganwadi workers sat on a dharna at the Housing Board Light Points.

Arshia Sharma, a resident of Sector 28, said, “People should be informed in advance of any protests. Residents are inconvenienced for no fault of theirs.”
