In a daring robbery, four armed men and a woman, concealing their faces with helmets, barged into a jewellery shop in Sector-5 Mansa Devi Complex, on Sunday afternoon, tied-up the shop owner’s father and two other employees and made off with jewellery worth Rs. 50 lakh and a Swift Dzire car.
The attack at Rajat Jewellers in Sector 5 was so sudden and swift that the shop staff could not even react. Ansh Khanna, the 60-year-old father of shopowner Rajat Khanna, and the two employees present in the shop at that time, Ganesh and Jatin, were first blinded by the use of chilli powder and then tied up with a rope at gunpoint.
Ansh was also attacked with a sharp-edged weapon. “We were given no time to react. The robbers simply overpowered us.”
The robbery seemed to be the handiwork of a gang, whose members arrived at the market in a white Chevrolet Cruze car. Khanna told the police that he suspected that there were eight people in the gang as he saw more people roaming and standing guard outside the shop. The robbers’ attempt to break the CCTV cameras did not succeed and the footage shows four men entering the shop with revolvers and sharp-edged weapons.
The police said that based on the sequence of the events, the robbers had come fully prepared and were well-versed with the interior of the shop. Within minutes, they took away all the gold in three gunny bags which they had got with them.
The robbers also took the keys of Ansh’s Maruti Swift Dzire from a drawer next to his chair and rushed outside; knew exactly where it was parked and fled with the vehicle.
SHO Mansa Devi Suraj Chawla said: “An FIR has been lodged in the case and the victim has claimed that jewellery worth Rs. 50 lakh has been missing.”
POLICE NAKA JUST OPPOSITE ROAD
The shop has a police naka on the opposite road, but there was no response from the department even as the robbers stayed for about 20 minutes to carry out the crime. The commissioner’s office is also nearby in Sector 4, but the crime was committed in broad daylight. Police have seized the CCTV footage.
