Feeble after more than a month of indefinite hunger strike in Punjab, Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa, fighting for the release of over-detained Sikh militants, on Saturday fed a message of peace and justice on webcast to a crowd of more than 1,200 here.

Referring to the capacity crowd, Ontario Sikh and Gurdwara Council (OGC) member Daljeet Singh Sehkon said Khalsa's courage, determination and strength had influenced overseas Sikh community profoundly. "When you look around the hall and see how many people have come to support him, it's overwhelming," he said.

Khalsa spoke of his disappointment with the Indian judiciary and the importance of peaceful protest and meditation for anyone wanting to support his cause. Even after a long indefinite fast, he remains positive and hopeful. "We commend him for taking this stand and bringing to light this issue," said Ontario Sikh and Gurdwara Council spokesman Lakhwinder Singh Dhaliwal of Gurdwara Guru Nanak Mission Center.

The community leaders concluded the event with a discussion on the next steps for the cause. "Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa delivered a message of hope and peace tonight. His conviction is testament to his dedication for the judicial rights of all minorities in India. As Canadians and Sikhs, we're so proud to be ambassadors of his message of peace and protest," said Amaninder Singh of the Coalition of Sikh Organisations (COSO).
