Death sentence is given to a woman and her boyfriend who, to save their relationship, killed seven members of her family at Kabpulpur village, 15 kilometres from here.

They first drugged and then strangulated the family. Accomplice Jasbir, who brought them the sleeping pills, gets life imprisonment.

The verdict came on Thursday in the district and sessions court here.

The main convicts, Sonam Dagar (23) and her boyfriend, Navin Dagar (24), are from the same clan, marriage within which is a taboo in rural Haryana and not tolerated by panchayats, which are known to order honour killings. Forced to break up the relationship and fearing the family would never come round, Sonam chose to kill her parents, Surender (45) and Promila (40); brother, Arvind (15); grandmother, Bhuro Devi (70); and cousins, Vishal (10), Sonika (12); and Monica (14).

On the night of September 14, 2009, Sonam drug-laced the family's dinner and milk; and after all the targets were sedated around midnight, she joined Navin in strangulating them with a rope and a dupatta (a long scarf, part of women's apparel).

Omvir, the chemist who had sold the sleeping pills from his shop at Chhara village in Jhajjar district, is acquitted.
