The local police have arrested Panjab University (PU) student Deepak Kaushal for his alleged involvement in the murder of advocate Amarpreet Singh, who was shot dead outside his house over parking of vehicles in Phase 3A, SAS Nagar.
"Deepak Kaushal alias Gola, aged about 25, is a second-year law student at PU. He was arrested from PU hostel number 2 in the wee hours of Wednesday. He was staying as a guest in the hostel," said Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, senior superintendent of police (SSP), SAS Nagar. Kaushal is a resident of Phase 3A.
Bhullar added, "With Kaushal's arrest, we have nabbed four out of the nine accused, and raids are on to nab the other accused as well."
Advocate Amarpreet Singh was shot dead outside his house after he had objected to parking of vehicles in front of the gate. Amarpreet's cousin Gaganjot Sethi, son of former MC councillor Manjeet Singh Sethi, and his friend Simarjeet Singh, had sustained injuries in the firing.
The police have already arrested three persons - Jaswinder Singh, son of SGPC member from Ludhiana (rural) Ranjeet Singh; Sunbir Singh, son of Daljeet Singh, who is a partner in Alpha Mall at Amritsar, and his relative Omkar Singh.
The remaining accused, Sunil Bhanot alias Chhoti of Sector 45, Chandigarh; Rajat of Burail; Dharminder Singh of Ludhiana, a proclaimed offender in a murder case; Kevin Sushant alias Richi of Kharar, who is accused in cases of assault; and Vishal of Delhi, are at large.
Cousin, uncle arrested for harbouring Kaushal
Besides Kaushal, the police have also arrested his uncle, Suraj Kumar and cousin Jagwinder Kumar, on charges of harbouring an accused and forgery.
"We have arrested Suraj Kumar (47) and his 25-year-old son, Jagwinder Kumar, after registering a case in Zirakpur on charges of harbouring an accused and forgery. The duo not only provided shelter to the accused, but even helped him financially during the period of hiding," said Bhullar.
He added that Jaswinder had even provided a mobile SIM to Kaushal on fake identity proofs.
Accused remanded in 5-day police custody
The local court on Wednesday remanded Kaushal in five-day police custody. While producing him before the court, the police maintained that Kaushal's custodial interrogation was needed to recover the weapon used in the crime, as the complainant had alleged that all accused involved in the crime were armed.
PU hostels: a safe haven for criminals?
Kaushal's arrest from a PU hostel has brought to fore how the hostels on university campus can be used as a safe haven by criminals. Kaushal's stay at the PU hostel has also exposed that there is no check on outsiders staying in the hostel.
