Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) politburo member SAR a machandran Pilla, who on Friday presided over the party’s Punjab state committee general body meeting, acknowledged that the Left’s failure in reviving its mass base had resulted in the “Rightward turn” in Indian politics that helped the BJP get a clear mandate in the 2014 elections.

Explaining in detail the review of the Lok Sabha elections, as done by the CPM’s central committee in its meeting held last month in Delhi, Pillai said the BJP was able to channel the anti-Congress wave in its favour, which developed due to the people’s anger against chronic price rise, agrarian distress, unemployment and massive corruption under the UPA government. “Full support from big business and corporate houses was a significant factor,” he said. Commenting on the CPM’s performance, Pilla admitted to a decline in the party’s mass base and the failure to advance its political influence.

He said the CPM’s central committee had decided to reexamine the political-tactical line, being pursued in the context of allying with regional bourgeois parties. He also said that the party would study the impact of neo-liberal policies and formulate an approach.
