Though Shah Rukh Khan has been intensely romancing Bollywoood for over two decades, he kissed (yes, for the first time onscreen) only now. The lover boy surprised his audience when he locked lips with his leading lady Katrina Kaif in Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

While fellow actors and technicians say kissing onscreen is no big deal for a professional like SRK, his fans says it was shocking to see him in a lip-lock for the first time.

About his first-ever professional lip-lock, the King Khan, while at HT Leadership Summit in Delhi said, “Whenever I sign a film, I have two clauses—first is the no-kiss clause and second is that I will not ride a horse—I find both very uncomfortable and I don’t know how to do either onscreen. But then, Jab Tak Hai Jaan is a special film. Yash ji talked to everyone on sets and told me that the script required it. Then, Adi [Aditya Chopra], Katrina and Yash ji almost forced me to agree to it.”

On a jovial note he added, “They also paid me to do it. But, kissing onscreen for me is as mechanical as it gets. I become very awkward about it because there are like a 100 people on the set telling you what to do!”

Noted cinematographer-turned-director, Manmohan Singh, who has worked with SRK in movies such as Darr, DDLJ, Dil Toh Pagal Hai and Mohabbatein, avers, “After finalizing the script, Yash ji always narrates it to his entire team—be it actors or technicians. It’s only when everybody is fine with it that he goes ahead with the shoot. Also, he was one man who would add a kissing scene in the film only if it’s the requirement of the script.”

About Shah Rukh’s professionalism, he adds, “I have seen Shah Rukh right from his first Yash Raj banner movie, Darr. He is very hardworking, sincere and dedicated to his work. One thing I can assure you is that he would do something like this only if it the script requires it.”

Actor Divya Dutta, his co-star in the movie Veer Zara, who attended the much-hyped premiere of JTHJ, adds, “I loved the film and it was beautiful to watch two gorgeous people kiss onscreen. Honestly, it was more of a peck than an actual smooch. If you look at it that way, there was also a lovemaking scene in the film. These things are a part of the script; they have to be shown to portray passion.”

While actor Tania Abrol, who worked with him in Chak De! India, quips, “Shah Rukh is a thorough professional and has immense love and respect for Yash ji. He could break his no-kiss rule only for the Yash Raj banner. In fact, it would be fun watching him kiss onscreen!”

King Khan’s female fans, however, have a mixed reaction to the kiss. Ashima Sharma, a student of GCG-11 and a die-hard SRK fan, says, “I was actually shocked to see Shah Rukh in a lip-lock with Katrina, but he pulled it off so beautifully! Though it looked beautiful onscreen, one could figure out that he was uncomfortable doing it.
