A local court sentenced a Dera Bassi resident to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for abetment of suicide on Wednesday.

Additional session and district judge Jaswinder Sheemar held Amandeep Kumar, a resident of Fatehpur village in Dera Bassi, guilty of driving his wife Pinky to suicide. The court, however, acquitted Kumar’s father Vanish Kumar, mother Pushpa, brother Vishaldeep and younger sister Neha due to insufficient evidence.

On February 13, 2013, Pinky was found hanging from a ceiling fan at the couple’s home. Manga Ram, the victim’s father, in his complaint, accused Kumar and his family of harassing her for dowry.
