Actress Mandy Takhar takes pride in being called one of three leading ladies of Punjabi cinema. “A lot of people tell me how I, Neeru (Bajwa) and Surveen rule Pollywood as actresses. I feel proud as I have achieved this in a very short time,” said Mandy, in Ludhiana on Sunday along with the rest of the cast of the Punjabi film Ishq Garaari, that releases today.
Ishq Garaari has been directed by Dheeraj Rattan and stars Punjabi singer-actor Sharry Mann, actors Vinaypal Buttar, Ranvijay Singh, Miss Pooja, Gulzar Chahal, Gunjan Walia, Chacha Raunki Ram and Prabhleen Sandhu.
Mandy, who was born and brought up in the UK and has roots in Punjab, shifted base to India seven years ago and made her debut in regional cinema with the Punjabi film Ekam: Son of Soil in 2010.
She then went on to star in Mirza: The Untold Story, Saadi Wakhri Hai Shaan and Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22. Now settled in Mumbai, Mandy is currently working for a Tamil movie titled Biryani.
“Besides, I am doing a Telugu film. Bollywood, however, continues to elude me but I hope to land a good offer soon,” she said.
In Ishq Gararri Mandy plays Miss Sweety, a girl besotted by Miss Pooja, who is playing herself in the film.
Talking about her career, Mandy said she feels very lucky that she landed in Pollywood at a time when the industry is at its peak. “Bollywood actors are starring in Punjabi films. The budgets are growing. The cinema is enjoying a wide reach thanks to the NRI markets. There is a lot going for Pollywood actors these days,” she opined.
Mandy believes that she has achieved much in a short time. “It’s just been three years and I am a known face already. Coming from a non-film background, this is indeed an achievement,” she said.
Sharing about her family, she said that while her father is into business, her two sisters are well educated and settled in corporate jobs.
“Mujhe hi acting ka keeda pada tha (Only I am affected by the acting bug),” she laughs. “I have been crazy about movies since childhood. I still get so engrossed in a movie that people spot me smiling like an idiot with eyes glued to the screen,” she said.
