Following the Punjab and Haryana high court’s decision to not allow Adesh University, Bathinda, to hold separate counselling for its MBBS seats, the university refused to participate in the second counselling conducted by the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) at Faridkot on Thursday.

The BFUHS had invited principals of all medical colleges concerned, including Adesh University, for the counselling. Principals or representatives of all medical colleges of the state were present, except Adesh.

Dr SS Gill, vice-chancellor, BFUHS, confirmed the development. However, he made it clear that Adesh University’s action would not have any impact on the admission process. Except minority institutions, the BFUHS has the rights to fill all MBBS/BDS seats in Punjab, including those of Adesh University, he said.

On Wednesday, while dismissing Adesh University’s application for permitting it to conduct the second counselling for its medical seats, the high court had allowed BFUHS to conduct the second counselling for Adesh’s unfilled medical seats. Justice GS Sandhawalia had reserved the judgment on Adesh University’s petition challenging the Punjab government’s June 16 order stopping it from independent counselling and ordering the BFUHS to conduct centralised counselling.

Now, the court’s judgment would decide the fate of medical aspirants counselled by BFUHS and Adesh University separately for the latter’s medical seats.
