Police here on Saturday morning claimed that a militant was killed in an overnight gunbattle in Pulwama district near here.

"The body of the militant has been recovered along with an AK rifle and some ammunition," a police spokesperson said. Security forces had on Friday cordoned off Kangan village in Pulwama, 35 kms from here, following information about the presence of militants in the village.

As the security forces were closing in on the target house, the militants allegedly opened fire and the security forces retaliated. The exchange of fire stopped after an hour. The operation was called off for the night and the body of the slain ultra was recovered in the morning. The police said the identity and group affiliation of the slain militant was being ascertained.
