The man who led the Indian challenge to many victories around the world has found himself in the eye of controversy. Legendary athlete Milkha Singh has been named in the FIR lodged by Lt Col Vijay Singh Sandhu (retd) following the brawl that took place between the two groups of golfers in the Chandigarh Golf Club on Saturday.

Though Milkha was not involved directly in the assault, the complaint Sandhu has charged him as a conspirator.

Ugly scenes were witnessed at the club on Saturday when Congress MLA Randeep Singh Nabha, Flying Sikh Milkha Singh, former Punjab chief secretary RS Mann and SS Laihal were playing in a group and allegedly entered into a confrontation with another group comprising Lt Col Vijay Singh Sandhu (retd), Harmanjit Sethi and Ajay Kanwar.

Both the groups later lodged complaints to police against each other.

According to the Chandigarh police, both the groups had heated arguments, after which Nabha and Lt Col Sandhu allegedly attacked each other with clubs. Sandhu sustained injuries near his right eye, left hand and leg while Nabha sustained injuries on his head, leg and back. It was learnt that four-five golf clubs used in the fight were broken.

On the complaint of Lt Col Sandhu, a case under Sections 323, 506 and 34 of IPC was registered against the Congress MLA, Laihal and Milkha Singh. On the basis of counter-complaint filed by Randeep Singh Nabha, Lt Col Sandhu was booked on similar charges.

The Chandigarh Golf Club management committee will be setting up an inquiry committee to look into the issue tomorrow.

Flying Sikh denies involvement
A day after the brawl on the Chandigarh Golf Club premises, Flying Sikh Milkha Singh rubbished reports on his involvement in the unsavoury incident. Though he admitted that he was playing in the group of Congress MLA Randeep Singh Nabha, he denied he was involved in the brawl.

Recounting the incident, the 77-year-old athletics legend claimed that it was Lt Col Vijay Singh Sandhu (retd) who entered into an argument with Nabha over the issue of giving pass while they were playing.

Milkha Singh claimed that after Sandhu threatened Nabha, a verbal duel ensued that later took the form of physical showdown. He further claimed that both attacked each other with clubs, asserting that at no point of time did he or former Punjab chief secretary RS Mann participated in the brawl. "In fact, we both tried to persuade Nabha and Lt Col Sandhu to stop as such unruly behaviour is against the spirit of the game of golf," remarked Milkha Singh, adding that he was taken aback after he came to know that his name had been included in the FIR.

Supporting Milkha Singh, Bobby Sandhu said, "Milkha Singh is highly acclaimed individual. I am sure he was not involved in the incident."
