Minutes after conviction in drug case, man escapes from court

Minutes after a local court held him guilty in a drug smuggling case, Kala Singh, a Ludhiana resident, escaped from the court to avoid arrest. The accused was out on bail.


The UT police have registered a case against Kala. As per the police, the accused, along with a woman co-accused, Chindi of Sangrur, on Friday appeared before the court of additional district and sessions judge RK Yadav.

Kala Singh and Chindi were arrested by the police on September 30, 2011 for possessing 10 kg poppy husk each. The duo was booked under the NDPS Act and both of them were released on bail in October 2011.

The police claimed that Kala was present in the court and slipped out of the court when the court held him guilty. The court would be pronounce the quantum of sentence on Saturday.

The fact that Kala had escaped from the court came to light when the police wanted to arrest him.
