After a record turnout of 74% polling in the 16th Lok Sabha elections in Chandigarh, first-time voters of SAS Nagar are eagerly waiting for April 30 as the district administration will be offering discounts, movie tickets, gifts, pictures with poll officers, and appreciation certificates to encourage them to use their right to vote. Around 20,000 new voters are expected to cast their vote during the elections.
The administration has tied up with multiplexes at the North Country Mall in Kharar and Paras Down Town in Zirkarpur for giving movie tickets to firsttime voters. Appreciation certificates, gifts and mugs, are up for grabs, while pictures of firsttime voters will also be clicked at polling stations and delivered at their doorstep.
Speaking to HT, additional deputy commissioner, general, Parveen Kumar Thind, said, “We were happy to witness a record turnout in Chandigarh, and are hoping to have the same response in SAS Nagar too. We have tied up with some hotels and restaurants which will provide free vouchers ranging from Rs. 200 to Rs. 500 to first-time voters on showing their inked fingers after polling.”
He added that as far as movie tickets were concerned, firsttime voters would be given a day to report at the deputy commissioner’s office after polling. After they give us their polling booth details, we will check the records, and accordingly, issue tickets. “Appreciation certificates and gifts will also be handed to first-time voters soon after voting. We will also educate them through pamphlets,” he added.
District electoral officer Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu, said, “To bring awareness among firsttime voters, we have appointed ambassadors in various colleges of SAS Nagar, who are conducting activities such as, debates, seminars, and skits to encourage first-time voters. As far as other incentives are concerned, the idea is to create awareness among youth about their voting right. These are just small incentives to encourage them to cast their vote.”
