Union minister of state for women and child development Krishna Tirath has regretted that despite significant strides made by women in entrepreneurship, science and arts, majority of women in the country remain marginalised at home and workplace.

Tirath was speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony at regional centre of National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD) in Sector 79, SAS Nagar on Friday.

The minister said it was unfortunate that most of the women were unaware of the government schemes and programmes that could raise their status.

After operationalisation of the SAS Nagar regional centre, the fifth in row after Guwahati, Bangalore, Lucknow and Indore, NIPCCD would be able to expand its coverage in the northern region and help local
women to bring them at par with their male counterparts, she added.

The programmes of NIPCCD are targeted at enhancing knowledge and skills of trainers and field functionaries dealing with women at grassroot level.

Surjit Kumar Jyani, Punjab minister for social security, who was also present on the occasion, lauded the efforts of the central government in promoting the cause of women and child welfare. He informed the audience that 26,000 anganwadi centres were functioning successfully in 154 blocks of Punjab.
