The Punjab government on Wednesday constituted a committee to prepare a blueprint of the state road safety policy within a month, and initiated a move to cancel the permit of trucks, tractor trolleys and other such commercial vehicles ferrying passengers.

This decision was taken at a high-level meeting of the Punjab State Road Safety Council, presided over by transport minister Ajit Singh Kohar, who also mooted a proposal for a driving training and research centre and a regional driving training centre for the country’s northern states in association with the union government, a spokesman said here.

Kohar also asked the public works department to correct and put right black spots on national and state highways in the next two years.

On the council’s proposal, the meeting also decided to put a ban on trucks, tractor trolleys and other such commercial vehicles ferrying passengers, and such vehicles would also face the cancellation of permits as per the policy to come up soon, the spokesman said.

The road safety of schoolchildren was another matter of concern raised at the meeting and it was decided to instruct transporters to install speed governors in the vehicles ferrying children.

It was also decided to involve the managements of schools and other educational institutions in the drafting of the road safety policy.
