Five persons were injured in a clash between two factions of the Namdhari sect at Bhaini Sahib in Ludhiana district on Tuesday evening.

Stones were hurled by members of both groups, one said to be including supporters of sect head Thakur Udai Singh and the other of Thakur Dalip Singh.

Heavy police force was deployed in Bhaini Sahib, the sect headquarters, to bring the situation under control.

Niranjan Singh, a member of one group, alleged that people from the rival group trespassed on his house and assaulted him and his family on Tuesday night.

Maha Singh of the rival group alleged that members of the rival faction tried to mow down a person from their group.

More than 200 people from both groups gathered in Bhaini Sahib village and pelted each other with stones.

Tension was brewing between the two groups following a three-week-long hunger strike by supporters of Thakur Dalip Singh to seek permission from the Ludhiana administration to allow their entry to the gurdwara and dharamshalas under Bhaini Sahib. The strike was discontinued three days ago.
