New Chandigarh gets in-principle approval

Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Tuesday gave inprinciple approval to the New Chandigarh township, which is coming up near Chandigarh.

A presentation was given by a multinational architecture and engineering firm, Aecom, that would plan the entire township, including its layout, landscaping and development, according to a state government spokesperson.

Sukhbir approved the creation of a 'green necklace', which would include nature trails and bicycle paths and encircle the commercial district as well as much of the residential areas of New Chandigarh. He also okayed the creation of a water front alongside the commercial district, besides the creation of a 50-hectare lake, the spokesperson added.

The deputy CM gave approval for creating g rids on the Chandigarh pattern to ensure efficient planning of residential areas.

He also approved high-rises in both the city centre as well as group housing areas, with the only restriction being that they should be on the northsouth grid so that the view of the Shivalik mountains is not blocked. It was also decided that group housing would be located along the sector park with towers facing the central greens.

Other features would include an 18-hole golf course, besides encouraging organic far ming in its periphery.

New Chandigarh will have a unique land use mix, with 386 acres being ear marked for Edu City, 413 acres for Medi City, 75 acres for City Centre and 79 acres for Commercial Centre, the spokesperson said.
