Conceding to the long-pending demand of residents, union railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal on Saturday announced a new Shatabdi train from Chandigarh to Delhi from January 2013.
Bansal was speaking to mediapersons after reviewing the work to upgrade and beautify of the Chandigarh railway station.
He said: "Residents for long had been demanding another Shatabdi Express between Chandigarh and Delhi. The new train will be starting from January. The train will leave Chandigarh at 12 noon and will start from Delhi at 7:15 pm."
The train is being started to meet a long-pending demand of Chandigarh residents, who have been seeking another train to the national capital due to the rush and heavy booking in the present Shatabdis. There is one morning Shatabdi from Chandigarh to New Delhi, which leaves the city at 6.50 am and reaches the national capital at 9.50 am.
As per the proposed timings, the new train will leave Chandigarh at 12 noon and reach Delhi at 3:30 pm and in the evening. It will start from Delhi at 7:15 pm and arrive at Chandigarh railway station at 10:30 pm.
"The residents' demand for starting a new superfast train between Chandigarh and Amritsar with stoppages at SAS Nagar and Beas railway stations is under consideration," said Bansal, adding that the ministry is also considering a stoppage at SAS Nagar railway station for the present superfast train between Chandigarh and Amritsar. Bansal said in wake of the demand of residents, the present superfast train would also be stopping at SAS Nagar.
He added that: "The work of laying double track between Ambala and Chandigarh is in progress and as of now, the work on the Ambala-Dappar track is on while in second phase the work between Dappar-Chandigarh section will also be undertaken."
Bansal said: "Various long and short-term measures are being taken to make the Chandigarh railway station a world-class railway station. In order to increase the security at the railway station, more CCTV cameras will be installed."
The minister listed other steps being taken to add facilities like more ticket counters, wheelchairs, more parking space, trolleys for luggage, prepaid taxis, multi-level parking, etc., at the railway station.
He added that: "The site for food plaza has been identified and work will start in two months."
