The School of Communication Studies, Panjab University, is back with its yearly media fest, SOCH. This time, the department has gone a step further and invited reality dance show, Dance India Dance (DID) season 3’s finalist, Sanam Johar to judge the event, Dancing Shoes.
Archna Vijaya with choreographer Sanam Johar.
Twenty-one-year-old Delhi boy, Sanam, who was part of Remo D’Souza’s team—Remo Ke Rangeeley RDX—has made a mark for himself as a dancer in the industry, not only at DID, but also in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa (season 5) as the choreographer for model/actor Archana Vijaya.
A trained dancer in contemporary ballet, Sanam believes in giving priority to his studies. “I had been wanting to be a part of DID for the past two years. But, due to my exams, the plans had to be delayed. Once I finished studies, I gave the audition, and was selected immediately,” says Sanam, who is now a graduate in Physics from Delhi University.
Sharing his DID experience, his first shot at a reality-dancing event, Sanam says, “Mithun Chakraborty started referring to me as Bruce Lee, thanks to my lean physique. He also said, ‘I look up to only two people in the world— MJ (Michael Jackson) and Bruce Lee.’”
And about his JDJ (Jhalak Dikhla Jaa) partner, he shares, “Archana wasn’t a great dancer. So, we got eliminated within the first five weeks. But, I got a second chance because of my wild entry card with Avika Gor.”
Already a part of the small screen now, how can films be far? Sanam says he was offered a couple of roles while he was still a part of the reality shows. “Nothing could materialise then because I was already busy with the shows. Though dancing remains my priority, I’m up for acting too,” says he.
Currently based in Mumbai, Sanam has already assisted Remo D’Souza in his next directorial flick, ABCD, and Dharma Productions’ upcoming movie Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. The dancer is also assisting Remo in currently running epic drama, Ramleela.
With the hopes of being a part of JDJ’s next season too, Sanam is already working on choreography assignments from DID.
