To address the problem of traffic snarls in the industrial area, especially around Elante Mall, the UT administration has imposed restriction on free movement of vehicles around the mall by introduction of one-way traffic system.

The order passed by transport secretary Bhawna Garg takes effect immediately. It says vehicles would move anti-clockwise around Elante.

The area has been facing traffic problems for several years now, and it has worsened after the opening of Elante Mall, which is in close proximity with two other malls - Centra and City Emporium.

The draft master plan-2031 prepared by the administration has also highlighted the problem, underlining that the existing road network and parking areas are insufficient to handle the increased flow of traffic owing to large-scale commercial activity. There is little room for further widening of roads.

The joint forum of Industries Association of Chandigarh (IAC) and the Chamber of Chandigarh Industries (CCI) has been taking up the issue with the administration. Welcoming the new movement plan, Arun Mahajan, president of IAC, and Sandeep Sahni, president of CCI, said it would help ease the traffic congestion.
