Only eight liquor vends out of remaining 41 were sold in the third auction held by the UT excise and taxation department on Thursday. The department generated revenue of ` 5.7 crore. This year, the administration has decreased the number of retail sale vends from 217 to 173, out of which 119 were sold in the opening auction held on May 27 while 17 were sold during second auction held on June 6. Four liquor traders had surrendered their vends. Under the new policy, to curb the monopoly of trade by certain liquor contractors in a particular area, the waiting list of tenderers will be prepared. In case a successful bidder surrenders his vend after offering higher bid amount, his earnest money would be forfeited and the offer would be given to the second highest bidder. The new policy, announced on May 12, will remain in force for 10 months commencing from June 1. In the new policy, the administration has increased the earnest money to be paid along with application by the traders.

As per norms, liquor cannot be sold until EDP is approved by the department. Senior officials said efforts were being made to resolve the issue.
