The authorities have been directed not to use plastic flags since unlike paper flags, these are non-biodegradable.

A spokesman stated that on important national, cultural and sports events, only flags made of paper are to be used by the public as per provisions of the flag code of India and it has to be ensured that such flags are not discarded or thrown on the ground after the events.

"Such flags are to be disposed of in private, consistent with the flag's dignity," the order added.
