Five years after the local civic body passed a resolution to rename a street running parallel to Suraj Theater after UD Gaur, a former Haryana advocate general, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda effected the name change on Sunday.

"The civic body passed a resolution on naming a road after Gaur in 2009," said Ravinder Rawal, a former president of the municipal council (now the municipal corporation) of Panchkula. The street is under the jurisdiction of the Haryana Urban Development Authority.

Speaking on the occasion, Hooda said: "Gaur was an experienced lawyer who helped the poor during his lifetime". Among those present at the ceremony were Gaur's family members, including justice Sunil Gaur of the Delhi High Court, besides Panchkula MLA DK Bansal, deputy commissioner SS Phulia and Panchkula mayor Upinder Kaur Ahluwalia.

Gaur, who hails from Rewari district, graduated from St Stephen's College, New Delhi, and was later appointed a member of the University of Delhi senate. He was advocate general of Haryana from 1979 to 81 when the Congress party led the state government. He later resigned over the issue of an appointment in the advocate general's office. According to his son, AD Gaur, he was once offered three residential plots in Panchkula under the discretionary quota, which he refused.
