Panchkula doctor wanted for rape turns himself in

Less than 10 days after he was booked by the police for raping a 30-year-old woman in a Sector 17 hotel room in the city, former Panchkula district health officer Dr Lalit Vermani sur rendered at the Sector 17 police station on Wednesday morning.

He was later taken to the General Hospital, Sector 16 to undergo medical examination. Vermani, 57, who resides in Panchkula and also has a clinic there, had been absconding since May 6.

The alleged rape victim, who hails from Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh and was staying in a rented room in Sector 11, accused Vermani of raping her, after asking her to come to a hotel in Sector 17 and promising her a job. Footage from the hotel CCTV showed the woman entering the room with him and then exiting after a few hours.
Vermani said: “I’ve been framed and haven’t raped anybody. It’s a conspiracy.”

SENT TO JUDICIAL CUSTODY TILL MAY 27
The police produced Vermani in the district courts on Wednesday, following which he was sent to judicial custody till May 27. The court also ordered a medical examination to be conducted on him by a special board of doctors at the GMSH, Sector 16 on May 17. The court declined a request by the defence counsel to have access to the report of the medical exam conducted on the accused as also the footage from the hotel room CCTV.
