Panels to be formed to check paid news cases

The Election Commission of India has directed to constitute media certification and monitoring committees at the district level for scrutiny of paid news cases.

The chief electoral officer, Shrikant Walgad, said that for scrutiny of paid news cases, the committee formed at district level would consist of district election officer, assistant returning officer not below the SDM, official of central information and broadcasting ministry, (if any in the district) and independent citizen.

He said that district public relation or information officer or equivalent would serve as member secretary of this committee.

He said that for certification of political advertisements, the committees would also be formed at parliamentary constituency level and returning officer could co-opt as many members to assist him in certification of political advertisements as the number of districts falling in that constituency so as to have wider opinion and equal representation from all the districts in the matter of certification.
