Taking up a public interest litigation seeking directions to the Punjab state election commission to create a website and display affidavits of election candidates on it, the Punjab and Haryana high court has issued a notice of motion to the commission.

The petitioners, Jaskirat Singh (Ludhiana) and Parvinder Singh Kittna (Nawanshahr), submitted that the state election commission be directed to put affidavits of candidates for elections to panchayats, zila parishads and municipal corporations on its website.

The petitioners said returning officers did not display affidavits of candidates for these elections on their public notice boards and it was difficult for people to know about candidates' antecedents for the purpose of transparency in elections.

The case would now come up for hearing on April 24.

The numbing conformity

What is the best antidote for seasonal active disorder (which is just a fancy name for winter blues): a party, of course! Well it is December, the party month; and as a testimony, all of us have dozens of invites sitting on our side table for attending a wedding, Christmas, New Year and not to forget a Lohri bash.
