Though the decision was taken following an internal inquiry against Dr Parveen Bansal, regarding lewd messages sent by him to the laboratory technician, the termination letter did not specify the reason behind the dismissal.

Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research director Dr YK Chawla issued the termination letter to Dr Parveen Bansal on directions of the premier institute's governing body. Dr Bansal was still on probation.

On May 17 this year, the laboratory technician and some other research scholars had submitted a complaint against Dr Bansal to the PGIMER director, alleging that his "behaviour was not decent with women in the department". They also claimed he made advances at them.  Following this, the matter had been referred to a PGIMER committee formed to examine complaints of sexual harassment of women.

A well-placed source at PGIMER said the committee found that "explicit" text messages were exchanged between the two. "Dr Bansal produced evidence to prove that the laboratory technician had also sent him lewd messages," the source added.

The matter was later referred to the institute's governing body, which is empowered to take any decision regarding the services of PGIMER faculty. Contacted, PGIMER spokesperson Manju Wadwalkar confirmed the news of the doctor's terminartioon. Asked about the allegations of sexual harassment against Dr Bansal, she said: "Nothing of that sort has been mentioned in the termination order." Dr Bansal refused to comment. PGIMER officials also confirmed that proceedings against the labortary technician underway.
