PM’s speech: Govt schools’ expenditure may cross Rs. 20 lakh

Over 1,000 TV sets on rent and nearly 1.5 Lakh viewers—Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s live address to students on Friday is likely be a gala, but costly affair for the government schools in the UT, as they might end up spending nearly Rs. 20 lakh for arranging the live broadcast for PM’s address. Modi will address the students from 3 pm to 5pm.

There are 107 government schools in Chandigarh and a random survey and enquiries at 10 of these shows that each one of them has been spending an average sum of Rs. 15,000. This includes the cost of hiring TVs, arranging cable connection and bearing the expenses for videographer. In 37 Senior Secondary Schools that have enough number of rooms, expenses are likely to be end up between Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 25,000.

On Thursday, government schools ensured that all the technical formalities for the live show of the address were completed.  The majority of private schools have sent their consent to the department.

Government schools have relaxed their timings and will start their day from 11 am and remain in the school till 5 pm. Private schools have also relaxed their school timings so that the students don’t have to spend longer than normal hours in schools due to the PM’s address. DPI (s) Kamlesh Kumar said schools are ensuring the maximum participation of teachers and students on the day which is celebrated for their own service.
