Political temperature soars this week

The city’s political temperature will go up several notches, in sync with the weather next week, as political stalwarts and Bollywood stars descend on the firmament to pledge support for candidates.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime-ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Sushma Swaraj, BJP president Rajnath Singh will address the city crowd on March 29 in support of party candidate Kirron Kher. Party leaders from Himachal Pradesh including Shanta Kumar, Prem Kumar Dhumal will be in town.

Bollywood stars have also committed to Kirron and her husband Anupam Kher and the dates are being finalised. BJP leaders and stars Hema Malini, Smriti Irani, Shatrugan Sinha and Dharmendra are also expected in the city.

Prominent leaders from Punjab, Haryana and Himachal are also expected to attend Sonia’s rally in support of candidate Pawan Bansal.

Candidates have also revved up the campaign and are attending 11-15 meetings in a day.

BJP candidate Kirron Kher will have programmes from padyatra to door-to-door campaigning. Local unit BJP chief Sanjay Tandon said “We have started roadshows and padyatras.”

The BJP has planned a three-tier campaign with candidate Kirron Kher leading one part. Local and senior leaders like BJP local unit chief Tandon, senior leaders Satya Pal Jain, Harmohan Dhawan and Jairam Joshi are involved in phase II of the campaign. Councillors are leading the third phase.
Kirron will be participating in padyatras.

Congress has also worked out a detailed strategy. Bansal has been going for padyatra early mornings, besides holding meetings at markets during the day. Jannat Jahan said that she had intensified her campaign and is holding padyatras with more thrust on door-to-door.

“The aim is to cover colonies and slums AAP convener and star-campaigner Arvind Kejriwal will be in town. Haryana unit chief spokesperson Rajeev Godara said: “The schedule of Kejriwal  is being prepared.”
