The People's Party of Punjab (PPP) and Left parties in the state on Tuesday demanded removal of revenue minister Bikram Majithia from the state cabinet, besides seeking a CBI probe into the Bhola drug racket.

Taking cognisance of the arrested drug peddler, Jagdish Bhola's outburst that Majithia was involved in drug trafficking and the police turned a blind eye to this assertions of his during his interrogation, PPP chief Manpreet Badal demanded that the Parkash Singh Badal government should immediately go for a CBI inquiry into the entire case.

"The Akali regime, which basically functions through the systematic organisation of corruption and the illegal nexus between politicians, businessmen, cops and bureaucrats, is obviously giving the drug business a pass. People in Majha can attest to the fact that Majithia is actively conducting and condoning the sale of drugs, something that involves huge amounts of money and is one of the many sources of corrupt wealth fueling the Akali political machine," the PPP chief said.

"If the government does not understand the gravity of the situation, the PPP will launch a 'Putt Bachao Abhiyaan' (Save sons movement) to mobilise public opinion and force the state government to take corrective actions. We appeal to all political parties to join us in this cause because this concerns the destiny of Punjab," the PPP chief said.

"If he (Majithia) has done nothing wrong, he need not fear anything (any probe) and he will get a clean chit in due course of time," Manpreet said, even accusing the ruling Badals of patronising Majithia.

The CPI and CPM, who are the allies of the PPP in Sanjha Morcha, also demanded Majithia's removal from the state cabinet, endorsing the demand of the Congress for a CBI probe.

Punjab CPM secretary Charan Singh Virdi said the situation of this multi-crore drug scam case has acquired such dimensions that people will be satisfied only if the investigation is done by the CBI.

CPI national executive member Joginder Dayal in a statement here also accused the ruling SAD leadership of "patronising and shielding" the drug business in Punjab.

"Majithia should immediately be removed as minister and the government should go for a CBI probe into the role of political bigwigs in the drug menace," Dayal said.
