The Punjab government has decided to increase the fare of private buses by 8 paise per km. Transport minister Ajit Singh Kohar said this after presiding over a meeting of the department concerned.

Kohar said the fare had now increased to 91 paise from the present 83 paise per km. He said this action had been taken in view of the decisions taken at the recent cabinet meeting. Private bus operators had been demanding the fare hike.

He added that the decision to challan overloaded trucks, expired school buses and overloaded indigenous modified vehicles (gharukas) had also been taken.

Prominent among others who attended the meeting were state transport commissioner (STC) Pirthi Chand; director, state transport, Bhupinder Singh; additional STCs Amarpal Singh and Mahesh Garg; and managing director, Pepsu Road Transport Corporation, Rajeev Prashar.
