Protest after roof collapse causes jam

One person died and seven others were injured after the roof of a double-storey house in Colony No 4 collapsed late Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Nawab, 45, a carpenter, who succumbed to his injuries at the General Hospital, Sector 16.

Among the injured, all of whom were taken to the same hospital, were Nawab’s three daughters, Shazia, 15, Uzma, 17, Afrin, 12, and three sons, Shoaib, 11, Danish, 16, and Farhaz, 20, besides a  45-year-old woman, Rajeshwari, who resides in the neighbourhood.

Giving details, one of those injured said the family was having dinner when the incident occurred at about 9:30 pm. “The roof suddenly began falling down and soon collapsed. A wall of the house next door also collapsed, injuring a woman. Neighbours rushed to our help and promptly informed the fire department. A PCR vehicle and a fire engine soon arrived at the scene and began rescue operations”, he added. Fire department officials said the reason behind the roof collapse was poor  quality of material used.
