Panjab University (PU) vice-chancellor Arun Grover had to face the heat from syndics during the syndicate meeting on Saturday. Grover, in his V-C's statement, brought out the issue of allowing his section officer SL Verma to continue till further orders.

However, the house opposed the same on the ground that this May, Verma will turn 65, which is the retirement age.

After much discussion, the House resolved that Verma be allowed to continue till May 31. The members felt that the item should have been brought as an agenda item and not as part of the V-C's statement.

The issue of admission of 10 ineligible students by Guru Nanak Girls College, Ludhiana, also rocked the House. It decided that the admission of all candidates be cancelled and they may be refunded fee. It also resolved that strict warning be given to college principal Charanjeet Chahal and as a penalty the college be made to pay fine equivalent to the fee of all 10 students. The House observed that action should be taken against other erring colleges as well.

In a major relief to all university employees, the House approved the proposal of treatment of its employees at 12 different hospitals at rates in accordance with the central government. A committee had been set up long back to look into it, but the issue has been in limbo. Syndic Ashok Goyal raised the issue and it was approved by the House after discussion.
The members also proposed to the V-C that he along with his counterparts in Punjabi University and Guru Nanak Dev University should meet the Punjab education secretary and inform him about the issues being faced by colleges.

Raising the issue, Dr RPS Josh said no posts have been filled in colleges in Punjab for almost two decades now, due to which colleges were suffering on the academic front. The V-C said he will arrange such a meeting.
