Punjab assembly: Manna Dey, Pran among 42 paid tributes

At the start of the Vidhan Sabha session on Monday, the house paid tributes to 42 personalities who had died recently, including Hindustan Times journalist Jasdeep Malhotra.


The first day of the session that lasted for about 25 minutes also paid tributes to film playback singer Manna Dey and actor Pran.

Information and public relations minister Bikram Singh Majithia proposed Malhotra's name for the obituary reference. Former MP Gurbinder Kaur Brar, former MP Charanjeet Singh Walia, former MLC Balwant Kaur, former MLAs Sarla Devi, Hari Singh Saini, Satya Pal Dang, Kirpal Singh Dhillon, Kulwant Singh and Harish Bedi were also paid tributes.

Besides the 22 freedom fighters who died in the recent past, the house also remembered Shiv Sena leader Jagdish Tangri and Akali leader Mohinder Singh Pabat.

Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and leader of opposition Sunil Jakhar were present on the opening day. The treasury benches had 60 members present while the opposition benches had 38 members.

Former chief minister and permanent invitee to Congress Working Committee Capt Amarinder Singh was not present.

The house was adjourned till Tuesday.
