The Election Commission (ECI) on Tuesday asked the electors, who have been issued photo identity cards (EPICs), to produce these cards at the polling station before casting their votes.

These instructions were issued in view of Patiala and Talwandi Sabo byelections.

Chief electoral officer VK Singh said that the voters, who are not able to produce the voter cards, would have to produce some other photo identity documents for establishing their identity which could be a passport, driving licence, service identity cards with photograph issued to employees by central or state governments, public limited companies, passbooks with photograph issued by bank and post office, PAN Card, Aadhar Card, MNREGA job card, Health Insurance Smart Card issued under the scheme of the ministry of labour, pension document with photograph and authenticated photo voter slip issued by the election machinery.

He said that errors and spelling mistakes in voter I-cards should be ignored provided the identity of the voter is established by the voter card.

If an elector produces an EPIC of another constituency, such card would also be accepted provided the name of that voter finds his name in the electoral roll of the polling station, where the voter has turned up for voting.

The EC also banned exit polls and publication and dissemination of the result of such exit polls between 7 am and 6.30 pm on August 21, 2014, the polling day.
