The Opposition Congress in Punjab on Saturday put up a united face when Partap Singh Bajwa took over as the new president of the beleaguered party in the state.

Bajwa's installation was marked by the presence of leaders of all camps in the faction-ridden state unit of the party, including his predecessor and former chief minister Amarinder Singh who dominated the party affairs in the state for about 15 years.

Union ministers Pawan Kumar Bansal, Preneet Kaur, Ashwani Kumar and Manish Tiwari were also present on the occasion besides senior party leader Ambika Soni and AICC general secretary Gulchain Singh Charak.

Taking the Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD)-BJP government in the state head on, Bajwa said the Congress would not tolerate the acts of vendetta and repression committed by the government against the Congress workers in the state.

The government, headed by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, had crossed all limits of repression for which Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and British empire were known.

He said with the guidance of the senior leaders in the party and support of the cadres, he would put up a united fight against the Badal government.

He said a toll-free helpline would be launched in the state for the party workers being harassed by the government and free legal aid would be provided to them fight the false cases filed against them.
