Punjab govt sanctions 2.5 crore for uniforms

The Punjab government has sanctioned 2.5 crore for procuring school uniforms for government school students of SAS Nagar.

Of the sanctioned amount, 9.97 crore has already been disbursed while the rest is expected soon, said deputy commissioner Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu. Over 51,329 students from the city studying in Classes 1 to 8 are eligible to get free school uniforms under the Right to Education Act, 2009. Of this, 25,529 are girls. Besides this, the city has 13,455 male students from the backward classes while 12,345 students, also boys, are from Below Poverty Line families.

Sidhu also said that District Education Officer (Elementary) has been directed to ensure that the uniforms are stitched during the summer vacation so it can be distributed when schools resume after the break. Sindhu also announced that the administration would spend`5, 88, 78,000 on the development of schools, including the constructing new classrooms, toilets and boundary walls and other basic facilities.

“The administration has already spent 1, 36,31, 000 for the construction of boundary walls of schools and`2, 60, 68,000 on providing toilets in schools.”
