The Opposition Congress may be a divided house these days, but a day before beginning of the assembly session, the party on Sunday announced to gherao the government.

On the other hand, the ruling coalition asked the opposition MLAs to come to the house and not mock from outside like the budget session in March this year.

"There are a number of issues on which we will take the government head on. I have given a list of issues to speaker Charanjeet Singh Atwal; whether he allows them is up to him," said Jakhar, adding that the most important issue troubling the state was the procurement of paddy which the government had failed to deal with properly.

In a list submitted to the speaker, the Congress has demanded a debate on property tax, regularisation of unauthorised colonies, advance tax, industrial policy and power tariff. "To deal with all issues, a five-day session is not appropriate, so I have demanded that it be increased to 15 working days in the house, because during the previous sessions the government made the sessions a mere formality," added Jakhar.

"Let them come and attend the house for five days. In the budget session the opposition stayed outside in the name of a mock session," said SAD spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema, suggesting the opposition come to the house with a constructive approach.

The session will begin with obituary references on October 28. The house will pay homage to 37 people, including a number of freedom fighters, ex-MPs and MLAs. As per the list of business of the assembly, among those whose names figure in the obituary references include film actor Pran.

During the session beginning on Monday at 2pm, legislative business will be conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday, and non-official business on Thursday. On Friday, legislative business will be conducted before the house is adjourned sine die.

All MLAs should come to session

CLP leader Sunil Jakhar gave a call to his MLAs that all should attend the session. "We are 46 MLAs, which is a good number to gherao the government," said Jakhar, adding that the Congress wanted every MLA to take part in the session. "Moreover, people who have elected the MLAs want them to take up their issues," added Jakhar.

Former CM and permanent invitee to Congress Working Committee Capt Amarinder Singh, who is creating much political noise these days, especially against PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa, is under tremendous pressure to take on the opposition in the assembly session.

After his elevation to the CWC, he has been vocal and it remains to be seen in case he takes on the government. His attendance in the assembly sessions in the past has been negligible.

Session schedule
Monday: Session begins at 2pm with obituary references
Tuesday, Wednesday: Legislative business
Thursday: Non-official business
Friday: Legislative business, house adjourned sine die
