Punjab: Original certificates with state institutes, medical aspirants lose better seats

Only for want of original certificates that were with the state medical colleges and the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), several Punjab candidates couldn’t get into better institutions.

The second counselling at the new All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) last week was their chance to upgrade to top institutes. Only those candidates were considered who had the original certificates. “They were much lower ranked than those who qualified but had joined the state colleges already,” said Pathankot’s Vikas Hari Nanda, whose daughter lost seat at one of the AIIMSes because she had the original certificate but not in hand.

“It is injustice to the students who had the first right of admission,” said Nanda, adding: “The AIIMS administration should learn from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) practice, where the certificates are deposited with the medical colleges, later, and not sought during counselling.”

The parents have appealed to the BFUHS, Faridkot, to give students only three certificates back for a day to let them participate in third counselling on September 9. “If we allow that, it will lead to candidates’ blocking multiple seats,” said vicechancellor Dr SS Gill.
