In a bid to revamp the irrigation network in the state, the Punjab government would prepare a master plan to strengthen all canals and distributaries in the state. A decision to this effect was taken by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal at a meeting with officers of the irrigation department on Saturday evening.

Badal stated that under this plan, the existing irrigation network would be upgraded so that a majority of the farmers could be benefited and it would also help save a large quantity of water being wasted due to seepage and excessive silting in rivers, canals, distributaries and water courses.

Badal said the Rs. 1,565-crore project of relining of the Rajasthan feeder was a flagship project of the state government that would save 500 cusecs of water daily from seepage after its completion in four years. He directed the irrigation department to undertake entire project as per norms and specifications of international standards.

He also asked the department to expedite efforts to restart work on the Banur canal project, along with its nine distributaries, at a cost of Rs. 87 crore for creating an additional irrigation potential for more than 3,400 hectares.

Principal secretary, irrigation, KBS Sidhu stated after finalising all technical specifications for the Rajasthan feeder relining project in a week, a detailed notice for inviting tenders would be prepared within a month. Chief engineer, irrigation, AS Dullet, chief engineer, drainage, Vinod Chaudhary, and chief engineer, Shahpur Kandi dam construction, Harvinder Singh were also present at the meeting.
