Swapping shifts with a colleague cost an Indian-origin flight steward Sanjid Singh Sandu his life.

The 41-year-old Sanjid had switched shifts with a colleague on the Malaysian Airlines plane that was downed over Ukraine on Thursday.

All 298 people on board were killed in the crash which left wreckage and bodies scattered across miles of rebel-held territory near Ukraine’s border with Russia. The government said no Indians were on the plane which was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

Sanjid’s father, Jijar Singh, said his mother had planned to cook her son's favourite dishes on his arrival in Penang, Malaysia.

“My son spoke to me over the phone just before his flight. I didn't know that would be my last conversation with him. What has happened has happened," a tearful Jijar told reporters at his house in Penang.

Jijar and his wife received the news from their daughter-in-law, who is also a flight stewardess at Malaysia Airlines, the Star newspaper reported.

He said Sanjid, fondly known as Bobby, was his youngest child and only son.

Flight MH17 took off from Amsterdam's Schiphol airport shortly after noon on Thursday and was at a cruising altitude of 33,000 feet when it disappeared. The Boeing 777 is believed to have been shot down 50 km from the Ukraine-Russia border.

OMG! MSG is finally here

For once, Salman bhai must be having sleepless nights, and Shahrukh Khan must already be counting his days in the industry. PK or no PK, Aamir ‘sincere’ Khan would probably be the only Khan of the troika who would somehow find a way to remain in the industry despite this tsunami. Even Rajinikanth must be mulling retirement after all.Writes Aarish Chhabra
