Following the controversy over issuance of passes to uninvited representatives of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), the Punjab Raj Bhawan functionaries have written to the party seeking clarity on the issue.

The Raj Bhawan functionaries have shot off a communiqué to SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal asking them to provide the name of the designated authority of the local unit to which they could issue the passes in future.

Confirming the development, principal secretary to UT administrator, MP Singh, said, “We have written to the party head so that there is no confusion next time over the issuance of passes. The matter is under scrutiny.”

The Punjab governor-cum-UT administrator’s At Home function is held at the Punjab Raj Bhawan twice a year, and it is a routine affair to issue passes to the renowned city residents, politicians and other dignitaries.

The development is significant as leaders of a faction of SAD gained entry to the Punjab governor-cum-UT administrator Shivraj V Patil’s At Home function on Independence Day after obtaining invites in someone else’s name.

The members of SAD Chandigarh had complained to UT senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sukhchain Singh Gill and Raj Bhawan authorities that a representation on their behest was given to the Raj Bhawan seeking passes for the At Home function.

The person took five passes, including that in the name of Chandigarh SAD unit president Jagjit Singh Kang. There are three factions of the SAD in Chandigarh who claim that they are the ones representing the party.

On the other hand, keeping in view the allegations that this time many people managed to attend the At Home function even though they were not among the invitees, the Raj Bhawan is mulling over coming up with a fool-proof entry system.

Besides, an inquiry has been marked to check how many people managed entry into the Raj Bhawan without direct invites.

The issue has brought to fore chinks in security at the function attended by UT administrator-cum-Punjab Governor and various dignitaries and officials.
