Another period drama is in the offing from Bollywood, and none other than the industry’s newest poster boy, actor Ranveer Singh, is in talks to play Baji Rao in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s most talked-about film, Bajirao Mastani. Baji Rao was an eminent general who served as Peshwa (prime minister) to the fourth Maratha Chhatrapati (emperor) Shahu Sambhaji Raje Bhosale, from 1720 until his death in 1740. The Peshwa, fondly referred to as ‘Rau’, has been recognised as one of the most influential peshwas, who worked extensively in expanding the Maratha empire to the north of India.

Bhansali had been planning to make a film on Baji Rao and his ladylove, Mastani, for the last 15 years. He had conceptualised the project with his Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam starcast, Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. There is buzz that Ranveer, 28, will have to shave his hair off for playing Baji Rao. “He is in talks for the film already. But until things are finalised, we can’t say anything,” says Ranveer’s spokesperson.

The names of big actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn and Hrithik Roshan had cropped up earlier, but Ranveer seems to be the front-runner now. He worked with Bhansali in his last Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela as well, which was a huge hit. Buzz is that Ranveer’s rumoured flame, actor Deepika Padukone will play Mastani. If all goes well, the film will go on floors next year, say sources.
