The police on Tuesday filed a challan in a local court less than a day after lodging an FIR in connection with the alleged rape of a five-year-old girl belonging to a migrant labourer's family.

The challan was filed in the court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM) Jagdeep Kaur Virk.
The suspect, Manoj Misher, was produced before the CJM, who remanded him in judicial custody till February 19.

The child was allegedly raped by the suspect, who hails from her native place, Samastipur (Bihar), and is her father's acquaintance, when she was alone at home here on Monday.

The police had registered a case under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, and arrested the accused immediately.

Rupnagar senior superintendent of police (SSP) Inder Mohan Singh said the police had acted swiftly in the case and filed the challan in the court within a record time of 21 hours of lodging of the FIR. He said now it was up to the court to expedite the trial.
