The temperatures fell to sub-zero in some parts. Narnaul in Haryana recorded a minimum of minus 3 degree Celsius, the lowest temperature since 1969. In Punjab, Bathinda recorded minus 0.4 degree Celsius. Three people died of cold in Amritsar on Sunday, which shivered at 1.8 degree Celsius.

According to the meteorological centre, the temperature started falling in the second half of December and remained from 13 to 15 degree Celsius, one to two degrees below normal.

In January, the minimum temperature has been 1-2 degree Celsius. The day temperatures fell by 8-9 degree Celsius due to foggy conditions in Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab leading to severe cold, and the maximum temperature recorded was less than 16 degree Celsius.

In Himachal Pradesh, Keylong in tribal Lahaul and Spiti district was the coldest place with a low of minus 11 degrees Celsius, followed by Kalpa in Kinnaur district, which recorded a minimum of minus 6.2 degrees. Shimla recorded minus 0.6 degree Celsius.

In Jammu, the maximum temperature has come down to 6.4 degree Celsius.

The latest weather conditions and interpretation of different weather models indicate that cold to severe cold wave conditions would prevail in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh in the next 24 hours and improve afterwards.

The prevailing dense fog would abate from Punjab and Haryana, including Chandigarh, after 24-36 hours, leading to rise in day and night temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius. "The weather is likely to improve in the next few days," said Surinder Paul, met director.
